âThereâs more,â Osiris said after Lisette and Severine had changed and Bernadette and Solange had retrieved dinner from a restaurant. âWe saw Florette.â
âFlorette?â Severine demanded. âMy cousin? Here?â
âShe was in the club too. Sitting at the table with Fingers Valentineâs son and chatting with my wife as if they were lifelong friends.â
The silence was shocking until Solange added, âThat would explain why someone targeted Severine. We put her on the boat as Miss DuNoir.â
Charles shook his head. âI booked all of the cabins under my own name. Severine thoughââ
Severine shook her head and told Osiris and Greyson, âI bribed the captain to stop the boat so we could get the dogs off. He knew my name.â
âAnyone who knows us knows not just to look for a DuNoir. Brand would be as obvious as anything else. Oliver. Even Thorne if you were in New Orleans.â
âWhy is Florette here?â Severine asked. âWhy would someone be looking for her and find me?â
âBut they wouldnât,â Charles countered. âThereâs a reason they came to you. Someone misdirected Mr. Hobb.â
âI agree,â Bernadette added. âDid you tell Florette you were coming to Chicago? I assume you didnât talk to Henry or anyone else?â
Severine started to shake her head and then she paused. âShe was there for her fatherâs funeral. She was upset. She blamed me.â
âHe hurt her,â Lisette said. âWhy didnât you tell us?â
âBecause I felt guilty,â Severine admitted. âWeâre stupid, arenât we? Our fathers are nightmares and yet we both wanted to love them. And I took him away from her. Iâm her Uncle Henry.â
âYou didnât pull the trigger, Sev. You didnât kill Henry,â Charles shot back. âWe donât know why Florette is here or what her family is doing to her. All we know is that Greyson and Osiris saw her and that someone was looking for her with Severine.â
âThatâs just not true,â Bernadette told him. âI know you donât think it either. Your âIâm-the-man protectiveness is overwhelming your logic.â
Osiris laughed and tried to cover it with a cough and then leaned back to admit, âThat did make me feel a little brighter.â
The sadness at Jane was returning, but with it, maybe, there was a hope for something beyond her.
âIâm glad my suffering can help you,â Charles shot back and then flopped onto the sofa next to Severine. To her shocked surprise, he reached out and took her hand.
They so rarely touched beyond the proffered and accepted elbow that it was almost overwhelming. She froze for a moment and then slowly curled her fingers around his hand. The others kept speaking, but Severine was encapsulated in that moment.
She stared at their combined hands, which made her think of those early days at the nunnery. It had, of course, been Sister Sophie who first hugged Severine. Sheâd just casually given Severine a hug and then pressed a baked good into her hands, and Severine had run to her little room and cried into her rugelach or whatever it had been. This time she knew what to
