“There’s more,” Osiris said after Lisette and Severine had changed and Bernadette and Solange had retrieved dinner from a restaurant. “We saw Florette.”

“Florette?” Severine demanded. “My cousin? Here?”

“She was in the club too. Sitting at the table with Fingers Valentine’s son and chatting with my wife as if they were lifelong friends.”

The silence was shocking until Solange added, “That would explain why someone targeted Severine. We put her on the boat as Miss DuNoir.”

Charles shook his head. “I booked all of the cabins under my own name. Severine though—”

Severine shook her head and told Osiris and Greyson, “I bribed the captain to stop the boat so we could get the dogs off. He knew my name.”

“Anyone who knows us knows not just to look for a DuNoir. Brand would be as obvious as anything else. Oliver. Even Thorne if you were in New Orleans.”

“Why is Florette here?” Severine asked. “Why would someone be looking for her and find me?”

“But they wouldn’t,” Charles countered. “There’s a reason they came to you. Someone misdirected Mr. Hobb.”

“I agree,” Bernadette added. “Did you tell Florette you were coming to Chicago? I assume you didn’t talk to Henry or anyone else?”

Severine started to shake her head and then she paused. “She was there for her father’s funeral. She was upset. She blamed me.”

“He hurt her,” Lisette said. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because I felt guilty,” Severine admitted. “We’re stupid, aren’t we? Our fathers are nightmares and yet we both wanted to love them. And I took him away from her. I’m her Uncle Henry.”

“You didn’t pull the trigger, Sev. You didn’t kill Henry,” Charles shot back. “We don’t know why Florette is here or what her family is doing to her. All we know is that Greyson and Osiris saw her and that someone was looking for her with Severine.”

“That’s just not true,” Bernadette told him. “I know you don’t think it either. Your “I’m-the-man protectiveness is overwhelming your logic.”

Osiris laughed and tried to cover it with a cough and then leaned back to admit, “That did make me feel a little brighter.”

The sadness at Jane was returning, but with it, maybe, there was a hope for something beyond her.

“I’m glad my suffering can help you,” Charles shot back and then flopped onto the sofa next to Severine. To her shocked surprise, he reached out and took her hand.

They so rarely touched beyond the proffered and accepted elbow that it was almost overwhelming. She froze for a moment and then slowly curled her fingers around his hand. The others kept speaking, but Severine was encapsulated in that moment.

She stared at their combined hands, which made her think of those early days at the nunnery. It had, of course, been Sister Sophie who first hugged Severine. She’d just casually given Severine a hug and then pressed a baked good into her hands, and Severine had run to her little room and cried into her rugelach or whatever it had been. This time she knew what to
